Parents were able to pick up some free diapers Sunday afternoon at a giveaway event in Hempstead.
The goal of the event, which coincided with National Diaper Awareness Week, was to help parents who may have a tight budget.
Disposable diapers aren't just a convenience -- they're a complete necessity for parents and family members.
On average, they can cost about $100 a month per child for a family.
"I had to borrow money from people then pay it back," said resident Vanetta Lewis.
Lewis said diapers are a big part of her budget as she takes care of her 1-year-old niece Tyesha. She picked up some diapers, plus other items at the giveaway event.
"When families get food, they are very appreciative, but when they get diapers, they almost cry," said Heather Edwards, of the Allied Foundation.
The Allied Foundation helps put on these events with the goal to help struggling parents and family members with diapers and other products.
"And we're also giving away potty kits to really help families bridge the gap and give families what's needed to make that jump from diapers to potty," Edwards added.
Diapers are not covered by government assistance programs like WIC or SNAP, so organizers said these giveaway events can make a real impact.
"We have families that come with three children and even handicap children so the need is there," said Candace Aguirre-Holley, of Hempstead Caring Hearts.
As part of National Diaper Awareness Week, there were other drives like the one in Hempstead that were held across Long Island.
Resident Dennis Perez has been to a few in the past, picking up some diapers for his 2-year-old brother Anthony. He said these giveaways really makes a difference.
"It saves me a lot of money…so this will be really, helpful for us. I'm really grateful," Perez said.
Organizers said they helped about 500 people with diapers and added that they'll be doing it another one in Hempstead in October as well.
The Allied Foundation said it will be at another giveaway event in Patchogue on Tuesday and expects to help another 500 people.
