Some Edison Township services are shut down after the Township Council failed to approve a budget or temporary spending plan.
The funding lapse has led to furloughs in several departments, suspended permitting and municipal court services and canceled summer recreation programs.
Mayor Sam Joshi blamed absent council members for the shutdown, saying it is hurting families and the community.
Councilman Richard Brescher responded that council members have a responsibility to review the budget carefully and ensure taxpayer money is being spent responsibly.
