National Weather Service confirms multiple tornadoes during Tuesday’s storm
It confirmed that in northern New Jersey, tornadoes formed in Stanhope, Lower Berkshire Valley and Pine Brook. An additional tornado was confirmed in Cape May.
The National Weather Service confirmed that at least four tornadoes formed in New Jersey during Tuesday’s period of stormy weather.
NWS teams were on the ground Wednesday to survey damage.
It confirmed that in northern New Jersey, tornadoes formed in Stanhope, Lower Berkshire Valley and Pine Brook.
An additional tornado was confirmed in Cape May. It started as a waterspout that then moved onto the land.
Powerful wind and rain pounded parts of Sussex County, including Stanhope and Budd Lake. It caused flash flooding and took out the tops of trees along a wooded stretch of land from Route 183 over to Continental Drive, which crosses Interstate 80.
Fortunately, for those living in the area, the only damage was to trees, not property.
“On first blush, we got very lucky because another 1,000 yards or so in any direction and that would’ve been going through some neighborhoods," said Stanhope homeowner Steve Gumeny.
“There was little to no warning from where I was. I was in my car driving home and it was just a challenge. I had to make a decision to get back to the store and take shelter," said Marcello Ramirez.
Marcello Ramirez was leaving work at The Plumbing Store along Route 183 in Stanhope when sheets of rain made it virtually impossible to see out of his car windshield. He made the decision to turn around and got back to the store.
"I don’t know what would’ve happened if I had stopped on the road. I couldn’t see anything," said Ramirez.
When it was safe, he looked outside to see trees cut down and covering the flooded road in front of the store. Since then, local roads have been cleared of trees.
