Vigilant neighbor helps police arrest Cherry Hill woman accused of stealing from unlocked vehicle

A Cherry Hill woman was arrested after a vigilant neighbor reported her allegedly checking vehicle door handles in a Gloucester Township neighborhood, leading police to recover stolen property taken from an unlocked vehicle.
Officers responded at about 8:37 a.m. Monday to a report of a suspicious person trying vehicle doors in a residential neighborhood, according to the Gloucester Township Police Department.
Police said officers arrived within minutes and found Nicole A. Ellis, 45, of the 600 block of Mercer Street in Cherry Hill, as she exited an unlocked vehicle. Investigators said property stolen from the vehicle was recovered and returned to its owner.
The investigation determined Ellis had also unsuccessfully tried to enter another nearby vehicle moments earlier but was unable to because it was locked, police said.
Police said the arrest prevented additional thefts and urged residents to lock vehicle doors, remove valuables and report suspicious activity immediately.
Ellis was arrested in connection with the incident. Police did not immediately announce the specific charges.
