There are conflicting messages about the planned implosion of the former Nabisco plant in Fair Lawn.
The implosion was originally scheduled for April 15. And now the mayors of two nearby towns are offering different reasons for why it was delayed.
Hawthorne Mayor John Lane sent a letter to residents stating that the implosion has been canceled until contaminants inside the building – mainly asbestos – are removed. He said he was informed of this by Glen Rock Mayor Kristine Morleko.
But Morleko tells News 12 New Jersey that the implosion has not been canceled but was delayed due to permitting.
People who live near the plant have voiced their concerns about the implosion and the contaminants that may remain in the building.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Projection will be removing those contaminants from the building before it is imploded, according to Lane.
Morleko says that she has requested two weeks’ notice before the implosion takes place.
A new date for the implosion has not yet been set.
