The sign for Newark Liberty International Airport’s Gate A17 is headed to Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The sign will now live on as a memorial for Flight 93, which departed from that gate on Sept. 11, 2001, before it was hijacked and crashed in Shanksville. All 44 people on board were killed.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey preserved the sign when Newark’s old Terminal A closed in 2023.
"We're honored that the Gate 17 sign will now find a permanent home in the Flight 93 National Museum in Shanksville,” says Aidan O’Donnell, general manager of New Jersey Airports at the Port Authority. “We're humbled to play even a small role in honoring the legacy of the 44 brave passengers and crew whose actions saved the lives of countless others.”
The gate sign will be permanently preserved and displayed as part of the Flight 93 National Memorial.
