The 60-year-old Nabisco factory in Fair Lawn is set for demolition later this month, but residents remain concerned about the potential impacts to the community despite reassurances from officials.
The planned implosion is set for April 15, and crews have reportedly already removed asbestos from the building.
However, there's a growing petition that suggests since the building was built in the 1950s it likely still contains other harmful elements like lead, mercury, PCB's, mold spores and arsenic.
The concern is that any implosion would spread these potential dangers over a larger area, before they settle in the ground.
The building is being razed to make way for a warehouse.
There are already plans for the nearby Alexander Hamilton School in Glen Rock to turn off its ventilation. Other schools in Glen Rock will be closed for at least the Monday following the demolition.
