A sheriff's report released Friday could lead to the closure of the Monmouth County Youth Detention Center in a cost-cutting maneuver.
Detaining one juvenile offender in the facility for a year costs taxpayers approximately $200,000. Monmouth County Sheriff Kim Guadagno says it can be done for less.
"That kind of cost is something the taxpayers can't afford anymore," says Guadagno.
The sheriff believes moving detainees to a facility in Middlesex County could save more than $2 million per year. Guadagno says some sacrifices would need to be made if the center is shut down.
"The downside is there would be layoffs," says Guadagno. "It would also be a farther drive for social workers, police officers and family members of the detainees."
The Monmouth County Board of Freeholders will ultimately decide whether to close the juvenile detention center. A public hearing is scheduled on the issue in Freehold on Feb. 10.
