On these final days of summer, United Airlines is celebrating an unparalleled season following an airportwide turbulent spring at Newark.
“This was the most reliable summer operationally that we have ever had at Newark,” said United CEO Scott Kirby.
Kirby said this milestone wouldn't have been possible without the Federal Aviation Administration’s help.
"This administration, the transportation security, the FAA administrator Bedford listened to what we’ve been asking for, for a decade or more, which is let’s run the airport, let’s put Newark on an equal footing with LaGuardia and JFK,” said Kirby.
Jon Gooda, the Newark Hub vice president, also gave credit to the FAA.
"Who really matched the capacity of the airport to the number of flights. That made a huge difference for us, and it labeled us to run our schedule on time and get our customers where they needed to go this summer,” said Gooda.
Over six million passengers felt the impact of the collaboration this season and flew on time, according to United.
The airline is also elevating its travel experience and used Tuesday’s event to give a first-hand look, like at the Airbus A321neo.
“Our customers can get to experience really big bin space, much better amenities on board, a bright open cabin and they can also pair their own Bluetooth devices,” said Gooda.
Six of these planes are already flying every day out of Newark, with more on order to join the fleet over the next few years.
But sooner than that, expect fall and winter additions.
"Very exciting for this winter Marrakesh is coming back for our second season nonstop from Newark,” said Gooda. “Domestically, we're also adding there, too. We're adding Chattanooga, Tennessee and Columbia, South Carolina."
This victory lap is a win for surrounding Newark, too.
"Glad to have United as a partner, always been a partner of ours," said Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. "Adding additional jobs, committing to over 2,000 jobs here in our city, committing to local sourcing."
