Protesters in Perth Amboy are fighting to keep a multifamily home and small business from being torn down due to eminent domain.
As News 12 previously reported, the Perth Amboy City Council was trying to close Quick Tire and a multifamily home on Smith and Herbert streets for redevelopment.
The owner of the multifamily home says the decision to take away her building hurts her and her tenants.
"When I bought this home, I took out every loan possible I could find to make the American dream a reality. I believed that if I worked hard and took care of my property, I would have something to pass on to my children behind me,” says co-owner Honey Meerzon. “But now I’m being told that my hard work doesn't matter, that my sacrifices and my tenants' lives are disposable."
Attorneys representing the two businesses say that the city has designated the properties as blighted. But the attorneys say that this is not true. They say there is no evidence of this claim.
A lawsuit against the city was filed on Wednesday.
