PUMP PATROL: Memorial Day travel is up, but so are gas prices

The national average for gas is above $3 a gallon, which is around a dollar higher than it was in 2020.

As restrictions ease across the country, travel is increasing.
Memorial Day travel is expected to be 60% higher than it was in 2020.
AAA is expecting 37 million people to travel this Memorial Day weekend, 90% of whom will be driving.
But, it won’t be cheap.
The national average for gas is above $3 a gallon, which is around a dollar higher than it was in 2020.
At the Ardsley Rest Stop off I-87, gas is going for around $3.29 a gallon.
Some commuters like Matilde Garcia say the higher gas prices are creating changes in travel plans. “We gotta pay much more now,” Garcia says. “It’s a very bad time for everybody economically.”
Ossining resident Robert Hicks says he can deal with the high prices to spend the weekend with his loved ones in North Carolina.
“I’m willing to do what I gotta do to visit my family and make sure they’re OK and they gotta do what they gotta do,” Hicks says.
Gas Buddy shows there are some thriftier options in the Hudson Valley, including at the Speedway at Route 9-W West Haverstraw, which is charging $2.91 a gallon.
