Jersey Proud: Naval destroyer named for Marine John Basilone
New Jersey’s most famous Marine was John Basilone. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1943 for what he did in the Pacific War. He could have stayed home, but went back and later died at Iwo Jima two years later.
A Naval destroyer is now being named in his honor. The USS John Basilone is nearing completion and will soon be a part of the fleet.
