Family members of a Republican Sayreville council member who was shot and killed are demanding justice.
The family of Eunice Dwumfour spoke publicly for the first time since she was killed in February. They expressed their frustration as the killer remains on the loose.
“Eunice is our everything. She is our everything,” said Prince Dwumfour, the council member’s father.
“It’s painful, I must tell you the truth, really painful,” said husband Peter Ezechukwu.
Dwumfour was shot multiple times on Feb. 1 while she sat inside her SUV outside her apartment complex. The killing remains unsolved.
“I want justice. Please, I want justice for my family and my daughter,” Prince Dwumfour said.
A motive for the killing was unclear.
“We just want New Jersey to know, this is a young, dynamic, bright woman who had her whole life ahead of her. Taken too soon, too quickly,” said Pastor Karl Badu.
The family's pastor and legal advisers said that Dwumfour's loved ones are frustrated by the slow pace of the investigation. This is why they spoke out at Sayreville Town Hall on Wednesday. There are no new details in the case.
Prince Dwumfour said that his 12-year-old granddaughter Nicole was home at the time of the killing and heard the gunshots that took her mother’s life.
“She was screaming and then crying,” he said.
The family is now left wondering who would want to harm Dwumfour.
Investigators have not commented publicly about the case in the last few weeks. They have not confirmed or ruled out any potential motive – from a personal vendetta against the council member to a personal dispute.
“I don’t think I am going to forget about her,” says Ezechukwu. “We have a lot, a lot, a lot of memories.”
Ezechukwu is a pastor in Nigeria. He says he prays for the case to be solved.
“I pray for justice. That is all I’m praying for. Justice for her."
A spokesperson for the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office wrote in a statement, "The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office will continue to seek justice for Ms. Dwumfour in a responsible manner that balances the needs of the grieving family, and to protect the integrity of our investigation."
