Former Manville police chief sentenced for sexually assaulting employees on duty

A former police chief in Somerset County was sentenced to 7 years in prison for sexually assaulting multiple employees while on duty.

Thomas Herbst, 57, abused his power over a decade ago while leading the Manville Police Department, according to the state attorney general.

Evidence showed Herbst assaulted a department employee and demanded sexual favors from the wives of two officers in exchange for a promotion and a schedule change.

Herbst will be required to register as a sex offender once he is released from prison.
