Woodbridge police have charged a man with arson following a large fire that damaged several homes in the Menlo Park section of town early Thursday morning.
A fire at 86 McGuire St. was reported around 3 a.m. Officials say that the fire destroyed 86 McGuire Street and also damaged five other nearby homes.
Neighbors told News 12 that they woke up to the glow of the flames.
“It was a fireball, the house completely engulfed in flames. Fire wouldn’t go out for hours. House next to them caught fire too,” said witness Lucero Contreras.
Officials say that they quickly determined that the fire was intentionally set. They say that police officers found 57-year-old Anthony Burke, who is believed to be the owner of 86 McGuire St.
Officials say that when officers confronted Burke, a struggle ensued. They say that four police officers were injured while trying to arrest Burke and needed medical treatment. Officials also say Burked was treated for injuries he sustained when allegedly setting the fire.
All were treated and released from the hospital.
The other residents impacted by the fire are all accounted for and no other injuries were reported.
Burke was charged with six counts of aggravated arson and six counts of aggravated assault.
