A police officer in South Brunswick has been suspended without pay after being accused of stealing thousands from the union.

Abraham "Jason" Gassman, 53, was serving as treasurer for the Police Benevolent Association when he allegedly took $75,000 for personal purchases, according to Monmouth County prosecutors.

He's also accused of filing fake documents to cover up the theft.

Investigators said they discovered the missing funds while looking into Gassman for a separate shoplifting incident at a department store in Ocean Township earlier this year.
