It was an emotional day in court Thursday during the arraignment of the man accused of killing a Paterson police officer.
Police say 23-year-old Teddy Charlemagne fatally shot Officer Tyron Franklin during a restaurant robbery on January 7. Both the victim?s and the suspect?s family members were inside the courtroom to hear Charlemagne plead not guilty on all counts. Dozens of Paterson police officers were also in court to support their fallen brother.
A Franklin family spokesman says this is a difficult time because the fallen officer would have turned 24 Thursday. The spokesman adds it was hard for the family to come face to face with Franklin?s suspected killer. Prosecutors say if convicted, Charlemagne could face the death penalty. Meanwhile, Charlemagne is still being held on $2 million bail.
