A Bayonne man is accused of stealing a dog after breaking into apartments, lying about it, and also leaving drugs behind during the process, according to Bayonne police.
Police say Steven Rodriguez is facing several charges after being arrested in the area of 32nd Street and Broadway. According to authorities, Rodriguez was trying to pry open apartment doors, got inside one unit and took a dog.
Rodriguez told police the dog was his, got agitated with officers and then tried to run, according to authorities. Police say he was then placed under arrest for obstruction. During that time, police say they received a call about a stolen dog inside an apartment of the building where they say Rodriguez had been observed prying doors to apartments.
Authorities say they also received a call from a homeowner nearby saying a man and dog were in her yard. After police left, they say the homeowner found crack-cocaine in her basement.
Police say the investigation revealed that Rodriguez had entered one apartment and stole the tenant’s dog, and he also entered the basement of a nearby home and left narcotics behind.
Rodriguez now faces multiple charges, including theft and two counts of burglary.
