Many in Highland Park are taken aback after surveillance video shows a man remove and run off with the Israeli flag inside a kosher pizza restaurant.
Gideon Fentin has owned Giddy's Pizza and Cafe since 2014. He's been located in Highland Park the last two years. He says his surveillance footage shows this happened about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
It shows a man approach slowly and then run off with the flag that was hanging inside the restaurant. Fentin told News 12 that police are investigating, and have this footage. Highland Park police had not responded to a News 12 request for comment as of 5 p.m. Monday.
“I don't think that we should be scared or not hang flags that you want to hang," Fentin said. "I think that this is the United States, and you should be able to hang what you want to hang, especially if it's for what you believe in as the right cause.”
Town officials came by the restaurant Monday morning to rededicate a new Israeli flag.
“[Police], the mayor, everyone - the whole community is involved, and that truly means a lot from all of us," said patron Benjamin Saffrin.
