Federal, state and local officials are working together outside Delaney Hall as tensions continue more than a week into ongoing protests in Newark.
Authorities say the situation remains active following another night of confrontations between protesters and law enforcement.
New Jersey Attorney General Den Davenport says more protesters were arrested overnight.
Officials say some demonstrators arrived with helmets, shields and gas masks and refused to comply with a newly imposed curfew.
In response, the City of Newark has put a curfew in place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. in a half-mile area surrounding the facility.Doremus Avenue has also been closed to pedestrians, with vehicle access heavily restricted.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill is supporting the increased enforcement measures. She says the focus should remain on detainees inside the facility, calling on the Department of Homeland Security to improve conditions, ensure proper medical care and eventually close the private detention center.
Protesters have been gathered outside Delaney Hall since Memorial Day weekend, also demanding the facility be shut down.
Federal officials continue to deny claims of poor conditions inside. The governor also announced that regular visitation hours at Delaney Hall are expected to be restored.
