A manhunt is underway in Mercer County after a reckless ATV rider ran over an Ewing police officer who was attempting to stop him at a local gas station.

The incident unfolded after Ewing Police Dispatch received several calls from concerned residents reporting a group of ATVs driving dangerously throughout the town.

An officer tracking the riders spotted one of the ATVs trying to fuel up at the Delta Gas Station near Princeton and Olden avenues.

When the officer stepped out of his patrol car to confront the rider, the suspect accelerated and drove directly over the officer to escape. Backing officers launched a brief pursuit but quickly called it off due to safety concerns for the surrounding neighborhood.

The injured officer was rushed to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ewing Police have released a photograph of the suspect and are asking for the public's assistance in identifying him. He faces a charge of aggravated assault on a police officer.
