A variety of law enforcement departments are looking for two gunmen they say shot up a home belonging to two Camden police officers.
The two officers – a man and woman – were not hurt. But the incident has left a lot of people on edge.
“Thank God the officers and their baby were uninjured,” said Camden Police Chief Joe Wysocki.
At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Wysocki was surrounded by members of the FBI, ATF and county officials announcing a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest of the shooters.
The targeted officers live in East Camden. Both have been on leave after having their first child just 12 days ago.
“We are looking into every arrest they have had, their contact. We won’t leave a rock unturned,” Wysocki said.
The shooting happened around 11:45 pm. Tuesday on Clinton Street. Police says that there was a driver and two shooters inside a minivan. The suspects got out of the van and shot six rounds into the couple’s home while they were asleep upstairs.
The suspect’s purple Honda Odyssey van was captured on a nearby surveillance camera, which was eventually dumped on the 600 block of Clinton Street. Police found the van Thursday morning.
Authorities are looking for any members of the public who may recognize the van or know who was inside.
“Right now, agents from the FBI are canvassing neighborhood interviews, gathering intelligence,” says FBI Special Agent Mike Driscoll.
“I want to send a message to the scumbag thugs behind this senseless act. We are coming to get you,” says Camden County Freeholder Lou Cappelli.
The officers are now under police protection at their home until an arrest is made. Fliers asking for help have been left for neighbors. Chief Wysocki was asked if this had anything to do with nationwide animosity toward policing, to which he says he doesn't know the motive, adding, “There are two shooters that are responsible for this crime, not everybody. We aren’t going to polarize the community to bring this case in.”
The chief went on to say he hopes this was an isolated incident.
