A Passaic man has been charged after a 27-year-old woman died following treatment at a Bronx wellness center, New York police said.

Officers responded around 1:10 p.m. Sunday to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital after receiving a report of an unconscious woman who had been transported there from Bereshit Lifestyle Center on Riverdale Avenue in the Bronx.

The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Police said Luis Rojas Cabrera, 55, of Passaic, was arrested Sunday night and charged with reckless endangerment and unauthorized practice of a profession.

According to the New York Police Department, investigators believe the woman was injected with an unknown substance before she was taken to the hospital. The medical examiner is conducting toxicology testing to determine whether the substance played a role in her death.

The Bereshit Lifestyle Center describes itself as a provider of holistic and natural medicine services. Its website identifies Cabrera as a surgeon, naturopath and member of the Dominican Medical College.

Authorities have not released the woman's identity.
