New Jersey ranks among the most expensive states for movie tickets

New Jersey moviegoers pay some of the highest ticket prices in the country, according to a new study comparing theater costs across the United States.
The analysis by CableTV.com found the average movie ticket in New Jersey costs $18.49, well above the national average of $16.30. That ranks the Garden State among the nation's most expensive places to see a movie, behind only New York, Hawaii, California and a handful of other states.
A typical movie date in New Jersey, including two tickets, a large popcorn and two drinks, costs an average of $57.96. That ranks eighth-highest nationwide and is nearly $4 more than the national average of $54.08.
Only New York, Hawaii, California, Georgia, New Hampshire, Nevada and West Virginia had higher average movie date costs.
Nationally, New York had the highest average ticket price at $25.24 and the most expensive movie date at $73.39. Arizona had the lowest average ticket price at $12.73, while Tennessee had the least expensive movie date at $44.73.
The study also compared major theater chains and found Cinemark offered the lowest average date-night cost at $48.39, followed by AMC at $55.91 and Regal at $60.84.
Researchers said theater loyalty programs, discount Tuesdays, matinee showings and local discount theaters can help reduce the cost of going to the movies.
