News 12’s Amanda Eustice rode with daily riders from Princeton Junction to see what the winter commute is like.
Before sunrise, the platform was crowded as commuters bundled up and waited for the train. Riders said the cold is a challenge while waiting outside but the train offers some relief. They also described the need for gloves and layers during the winter months.
Eustice followed commuters through the steps of their routine as the 7:07 train made its usual stops at Newark Penn Station and Secaucus Junction. The costs add up, with a monthly NJ Transit pass running hundreds of dollars before subway fares or parking.
Commuters said their daily expenses range widely, with some paying between $600 and $700 a month or around $50 per trip with parking and fare combined. Many said it remains cheaper and more reliable than driving.
The commute also affects family time, as some riders said they are awake for hours before even reaching work. The trip Eustice took lasted about an hour and seven minutes and cost $26.95, including parking.
