Gov. Phil
Murphy has announced new protective measures to keep families in New Jersey safe
from lead poisoning.
The governor
signed a package this morning in Bloomfield of lead poisoning prevention bills
into law.
Murphy says
the work comes on the heels of the replacement of hundreds of such lines in Newark,
adding towns all over New Jersey will benefit from this
legislation.
“In a state
where two thirds of our total housing stock pre-dates 1980, the risks of
lead exposure run broad and deep.”
Among the
benefits of the new laws, replacing every lead water service line in the state
over the next 10 years and regular inspection and remediation for lead paint in
rental properties, as well as an educational component, so renters know their
rights.
Over 200 lead
service lines in Bloomfield have been replaced, with another 1,000 expected to
be replaced in the next three to five years.
