The Cost Of: Gambling on the NFL

With football season starting tonight, attention is turning to the cost of sports gambling.

People are expected to bet $30 billion on the NFL this season, up 8.5% from last year. A large portion of that will be in New Jersey — the state that led the charge to legalize it.

So far this year, nearly $630 million has been spent on sports betting in New Jersey, though that’s down 4%.

This time of year often brings an increase in spending money people don’t have, and more calls to addiction hotlines.

The American Gaming Association is reminding bettors to set a budget, avoid chasing losses, keep it social, know the odds, use legal platforms, and stay respectful online.
