Verona police are trying to determine who placed hundreds of tacks and tire spikes on a trail behind an elementary school.

In a post on Facebook, the Verona Police Department said the spikes and tacks "were deliberately spread along the dirt trail in the wooded area behind Brookdale Avenue School." The trail runs parallel to Sunset Avenue.

According to police, the spikes were first reported on Tuesday night and have caused damage to multiple bicycle tires. Crews from the Department of Public Works and police officers went into the wooded area and retrieved hundreds of the spikes and tacks from the ground.

Police do not yet know who placed them on the trail, but they're asking for the public's assistance in locating those responsible. Anyone who has experienced damage as a result of the spikes, or who has any knowledge of the situation should contact Verona Detective Giovanni Desomma at 973-857-4821.
