All eastbound lanes on Route 3 in Clifton remain closed Thursday evening as crews repair damage caused by two spills on consecutive days.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation says that traffic is getting by on the left shoulder between Passaic Avenue and Main Avenue. The DOT also says that the exit ramp to Route 7 is closed and detoured.

The emergency repairs are due to a cooking grease spill that happened on Wednesday morning when a tanker truck overturned on the highway.

NJ DOT told Clifton officials that its earlier power washing efforts failed, and traffic will be limited to the far left shoulder. Crews have to mill the damaged parts of the road and then repave it.

Things got worse around 5:30 a.m. Thursday, when a dump truck overturned in the same area. The driver was not injured, but gravel spilled all over the roadway, according to officials.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area, as heavy delays are expected. Motorists should seek alternate routes around the area.

Officials say that the timeline of repairs is subject to change due to weather and “other factors.”
