Neighbors in Pelham Bay say they are still in shock after a carjacking ended with a man having to get his leg amputated.

"This neighborhood's always been safe, friendly," said Jack Anello. "Everybody knows each other.

The carjacking was caught on surveillance video Thursday, just steps away from the restaurant Anello owns with his family.

"We were here working and my father‘s car actually was parked right out there when it happened," Anello said. "He was hanging out inside and his car was parked right outside. And he was about to leave again."

That's when police say a man tried to stop his car from being stolen, but the thief took off with him hanging onto the vehicle. The car later crashed.

Angel Rojas, who works in the area, says he doesn't know the victim, but someone who said he was the victim's father came in his store and told him the injuries are rough.

"You come out your car, you leave your car, you don’t expect somebody to just go in and just take it like that," said Rojas.

Police say the victim remains in critical condition, as they continue to look for the driver.

Neighbors are also urging others to think twice before leaving keys in the car.
