A jackknifed tractor-trailer in Springfield caused commuter chaos early Thursday morning.

According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the crash happened just after 5 a.m. on the eastbound side of NJ-24 where it connects to I-78.

State police say that, based on preliminary investigation, tractor-trailer was traveling east when the driver lost directional control, jackknifed, struck a concrete barrier on the left, and hit the guardrail on the right.

The tractor-trailer was empty at the time of the crash and there were no reported injuries.

The DOT reported that only one of three lanes was getting by as crews worked to investigate and clear the crash.

The incident came as rainy, windy conditions moved into the state. The highway was fully cleared around 7:30 a.m.
