Animal control officials say a raccoon and a bat collected in the Wantage area have tested positive for rabies.

The raccoon was collected April 26 on Haggerty Road in Branchville, according to township advisories. The bat was collected April 27 on Rutgers Road in Wantage.

Officials said rabies is a life‑threatening viral disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans, and is most commonly spread through the bite or saliva of an infected animal.

Residents are urged not to approach wild or stray animals, to report suspicious animal behavior immediately and to monitor pets when they are outdoors. Officials also reminded residents to make sure pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations.
