Prosecutor: Old Bridge man charged in deadly drunk driving crash on Route 18
An Old Bridge man is facing charges for a deadly drunk driving crash, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Officials say that 20-year-old James Cannici made an illegal turn from Ferris Road onto the wrong side of Route 18 and struck a Honda Accord driven where 45-year-old Sayreville resident Florence Akoma was a passenger. Officials say that Akoma was killed and the driver significantly injured. They say that Cannici also struck another vehicle.
The crash happened around 11:15 p.m. on Sunday. Cannici was arrested for driving while intoxicated at the scene, according to the prosecutor.
Additional charges filed on Monday include aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide and aggravated assault.
Cannici is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center ahead of a detention hearing.
