The osprey was removed from the endangered species list in New Jersey this year. Some students at Stockton University are doing their part this summer to make sure the birds’ population continues to thrive.
The students are going around the marshlands around South Jersey to keep an eye on osprey nests.
There are about 30 nests near the Mullica River in Port Republic. Because the nests are out in the open, storms often damage them. The students go out to rebuild the nests.
Currently, there are more than 800 nesting pairs of ospreys in New Jersey. At one point in the 1970s, that number was only 50.
It's been a “Jersey Proud” comeback, with an assist from student volunteers.
