Plainfield residents impacted by flooding last month attended an event on Monday to help them with recovery.
Plainfield was one of the areas of New Jersey hardest hit by heavy rain two weeks ago.
An outreach resource center was set up at Charles and Anna Booker School. Impacted residents were able to meet with representatives from the American Red Cross, United Way and the Salvation Army. They were given essentials like laundry detergent and clean water. They were also provided with additional resources like financial assistance, food assistance and legal services.
The July storms flooded roads and homes and claimed several lives in New Jersey.
"We had flooding in the basement. It's been horrible because the insurance company wouldn't pay for it because they said we're not located in a flood zone,” says resident Shelia Slappy-Wormack. “We came here to get some kind of resource to see what could be done to help us.”
The effort is being spearheaded by the Plainfield and Union County offices of emergency management.
Since last week, more than 150 families have reached out for help because they had major damage or their homes were destroyed.
