Police in Brick Township have
arrested five people who were allegedly involved in drug transactions at a
local Wawa, stopping hundreds of heroin packets from ending up on the
street.
The incident happened Friday
around 11:30 a.m.
According to
police, they
watched what appeared to be a drug transaction take place in the parking lot of
the Wawa. Police pulled over a vehicle a short time later and took 200 wax
folds of heroin and Xanax pills.
Police say
less than an hour later, there was another alleged transaction, and that stop netted more
heroin, crack cocaine, a bottle of urine and cash.
The enforcement on drug and
street crimes continues after notable incidents over the last few years
stemming from a shooting outside Brick Memorial High School in 2019. Since
then, the street crimes unit added officers to the patrol and routinely makes
arrests. Police say the goal is to clean up the community.
"If they want
treatment, we do that as well,” says Police Chief Jim Riccio. “We will offer
assistance in the treatment. They choice is theirs, it's either jail, treatment
or stay out of Brick."
In all, five people were
charged, and four were sent to the Ocean County Jail. The fifth suspect was
released on a summons.
