Some Paterson residents have a serious case of sticker shock after receiving their new tax bills.
Due to a recent court ruling, Paterson recently re-appraised all of its property for the first time in 36 years. Everything from homes to businesses to apartment buildings were re-appraised.
Now, residents are saying their taxes are just too high. Some residents say their bills are now four times as much as they were paying before. One business owner says he doesn?t know how he can come up with the extra money at his small luncheonette. A rental property owner says 60 percent of his rental income will now go toward his tax bill.
In a written statement, Paterson Mayor Joey Torres said, ?Not all property owners will see an increase. It is expected that one-third of taxpayers will experience a reduction in taxes. Another one-third will remain approximately stable and approximately one-third will increase.?
Those looking to challenge their property tax bill may have to wait until early next year to do so.
