Nearly 50 homes were temporarily evacuated in Haledon Monday morning due to a gas leak.
The incident happened just before 10 a.m. on Norwood Street. Fire officials tell News 12 New Jersey that crews working on the roadway ripped up a 4-inch gas line.
Fire Marshal Robert DiVirgilio says that 47 homes were evacuated as a precaution and nearby streets were temporarily closed.
"The main concern was the open pit here because the gas was going to run down the open pit, instead of into the houses…and we can see the gas starting to come down,” he said.
People were allowed back into their homes around 12:30 p.m.
