A child died, and three other people were injured when they were struck by a vehicle in Oakland, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
Officials say the four people were struck around 3:45 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of East Oak Street and Ramapo Valley Road. The group included three children and an adult.
“Tragically, one of the children suffered fatal injuries; the remaining victims sustained varying degrees of injuries, including serious injuries,” a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office wrote in a statement.
The crash happened near a strip mall, church and doctor's office. The police station is just up the road. The posted speed limit is 25 mph.
One resident told News 12 this was surprising because he doesn't generally find the area unsafe to walk around, noting the many stoplights and crosswalks.
“I was caught off-guard by this," he said. "This is a very uncommon occurrence that happens. It’s a very safe neighborhood. Obviously, this is not a very high-speed road. Cars are always coming, but they’re always driving slow.”
Officials say that the driver of the vehicle who struck the victims remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
The name of the child who died was not immediately released.
