A new citywide speed limit for e-bikes and e-scooters officially takes effect today across New York City.

The new rule caps speeds at 15 mph for e-bikes, e-scooters and pedal-assist commercial bikes. Mayor Eric Adams says it’s part of a broader push to make the streets safer for everyone — riders and pedestrians alike.

“This new 15 mph speed limit for e-bikes is about keeping New Yorkers safe while continuing to keep our city moving,” Adams said.

Delivery apps like DoorDash say they’re on board, calling the change a “smart and sensible step” toward safer streets.

While some riders told News 12 they think 15 mph feels slow, others say it’s a good move — and maybe even not strict enough.

“It’s been so many accidents with those e-bikes because they’re going so fast,” said Prospect Heights resident Nubian. “I think they should have a speed law, but 15 maybe OK, maybe lower. But I don’t think they’ll follow the law.”

The Department of Transportation says its main focus right now is education — making sure riders understand the new rule before police begin enforcement.

“Our role is to educate. Look for the signs that we have establishing 15 mph — that’s our job. The NYPD is responsible for the enforcement part,” said DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.

DOT crews have already been out across neighborhoods reminding riders to slow down and stay safe.

News 12 has reached out to the NYPD multiple times for more details on how enforcement and penalties will work and will update this story when we hear back.
