A New York man, Jonathan Gardner, is under arrest after allegedly fabricating a robbery story while being investigated for burglary in Paramus.
On Sunday, Gardner called police claiming he was slashed and held at knife point in a Dunkin' parking lot on Route 17. He told officers he fought off an attacker who slashed his arm.
During the investigation, an alarm sounded at a nearby bank, where officers found a shattered front door, a hammer on the ground, and a damaged ATM.
A security guard identified Gardner as the suspect who attempted to break into the bank. Police arrested Gardner at a nearby gas station.
Gardner faces charges of criminal mischief and attempted burglary.
