Newark city officials marked Day 1 of the first phase to reopen the city amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Each phase in the three-part plan will last two weeks. Mayor Ras Baraka says that restrictions imposed on the city will loosen after each phase. But the mayor says that residents should get used to social distancing and using PPE.
“In Phase 1, day care centers are closed, summer camps are closed, but we will be doing alternative activities. Entertainment and recreation will be limited to virtual,” says Baraka. “Playground, movie theaters, arenas, stadiums, arts and entertainment venues remain closed. Food service restaurants, cafes, cafeterias, grocery store and other businesses must submit an application and have them approved to reopen.”
Restaurants approved to open can offer takeout, curbside or outdoor eating.
The city’s curfew is extended from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Family cookouts can have up to 15 people, but must end by 9 p.m.
