Some fear a riot at a Monroe Township juvenile facility is merely a preview of future violence.
Two officers sustained numerous injuries during the riot Sunday at the New Jersey Training School for Boys on Grace Hill Road. Jim Mandel, the officers? union vice president, says this is the latest fight among several violent outbursts. He adds things only seem to be getting worse at the center.
?This year alone, we?ve had an upward of 20 officer assaults,? said Mandel.
According to Mandel, the problem stems from policy changes made by the Juvenile Justice Commission. Mandel feels the changes seem to slant in favor of those juveniles who want to act out.
Mandel says several complaint letters have been written to the commission about the policies. He fears if the policies aren?t changed, someone could end up dying.
Meanwhile, the detention center has been under lockdown since the riot. The incident is still under investigation. Those involved in the riot have been moved to another facility and will be charged.
