A woman was found dead following a three-alarm fire early Friday in South Bound Brook.

The fire was reported around 3:46 a.m. on Howard Avenue, prompting a response from the South Bound Brook Fire Department, police and numerous mutual aid fire companies from surrounding communities, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.

One resident of the home was taken to a local hospital with injuries. A firefighter also suffered a minor head injury, was transported to a hospital and later released. Nearby homes sustained minor exterior damage.

During the investigation, officials found a woman inside the home. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner’s office is working to positively identify the victim and determine the cause and manner of her death.

The damaging fire appears to have forced a collapse of the upstairs into the downstairs part of the house.

Detectives from the prosecutor’s office’s Fire Investigation Unit and Major Crimes Unit are assisting South Bound Brook police and fire officials. The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation.
