Police have identified a Jersey City man as the suspect in an armed robbery at a Bayonne jewelry store and have issued a warrant for his arrest.
The robbery occurred June 18 at Jewelry by Peter, located at 180 Broadway, according to the Bayonne Police Department. Investigators said a man wearing a surgical mask entered the store, showed employees what appeared to be a black handgun and demanded $10,000. The suspect then went behind the sales counter and stole multiple pieces of jewelry valued at about $60,000 before fleeing.
Officers and detectives searching the area recovered clothing, a surgical mask believed to have been worn by the suspect and various items of stolen property near the business.
Detectives later determined the suspect used a rideshare service to travel from Bayonne to Jersey City after the robbery. Working with the Jersey City Police Department and New Jersey State Police, investigators tracked the suspect to a residence on Bayview Avenue in Jersey City and identified him as 24-year-old Tomani Johnston.
Johnston has been charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.
An arrest warrant has been issued, and police are seeking information on his whereabouts.
