Jersey City has eliminated one fire company from its fire department in order to save money from the quickly disappearing budget.

Officials say the city is only four months into the budget year, yet the overtime budget for the city?s police department, fire department and public works department is nearly gone.

Jersey City Mayor Jerry Healy says eliminating the fire company was a last resort, but a necessary move in order to ensure public safety and preserve the $2.8 million budget, which must last the city until July 1, 2009.

"I personally don't like it but I don't want to compromise public safety to any extent,? Fire Chief Michael O?Reilly says. ?We're all in this boat together. We're going to have to man up."

The city says no fire stations will close as a result of the financial crunch and the fire company will be brought back in July.
