Girl Scout cookie season is here and the 2020 offerings bring about a brand-new cookie, and a New Jersey scout featured on one of the boxes.
The new cookies are called “Lemon Ups.” They are lemon-flavored, with a hint of icing, along with an inspirational message like “I a creative” or “I am gutsy.”
“We actually had a lemon cookie in the past. They retired it,” says Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore CEO Eileen Higgins. “People complained. They liked the lemon cookie.”
“I really like them. I usually don’t like frosting, but this is really good,” says Brenna McCormick, a Brownie from Belford.
McCormick, 8, was chosen to be on the box of a different box of cookies, the “Thanks-a-lot cookies.” Her face will appear on boxes nationwide to help spread the positive messages of the cookies.
Higgins says that this is a big-time of year for New Jersey’s 72,000 Girl Scouts.
“It’s really a chance for the girls to learn leadership skills. That’s what the cookie program is about,” she says.
Selling Girl Scout cookies is a big business. Each season the girls set their own sales goals and are given tips on how to reach them. The Girls Scouts of the Jersey Shore sole $2.5 million-worth of cookies last year and sold over 1 million cookies in 2018.
The most popular cookie is Thin Mint – 234,000 boxes were sold, with the top-selling scout selling 5,000 boxes.
To raise even more funds for the scouts, there will also be a “Top Cookie” contest in February with local chefs making deserts using the cookies.
Nationwide about 1.7 million Girl Scouts will be selling cookies, beginning this week.
