High travel volume expected at Newark airport despite pandemic
Sunday was one of the busiest travel days of the year on the roads and in the air, even with pandemic concerns.
At Newark Liberty International Airport, there was less than the usual volume of flights coming in and out of the airport, but there was a pretty steady stream of traffic through the terminals Sunday.
The TSA reports screening almost 1.2 million passengers Saturday, which is down about 1 million from the year before.
Saturday looked to have the highest number of flyers being checked since Dec. 27.
On New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, the airport only reported over 800,000 screened passengers, which is down about 1.5 million from the previous year.
AAA says it is still surprised that it is seeing this many flyers being checked at airports - it expected significantly less.
It cites the number of cheaper flights going out as a potential reason for last-minute flight bookings.
