A tractor-trailer driver is presumed dead after plunging off a bridge and into the Delaware River Friday morning, according to officials.
It happened around 3:30 a.m. on the southbound side of the Delaware Memorial Bridge connecting New Jersey and Delaware. The collision left a gaping hole in the bridge.
A helicopter and police boats have been searching the water ever since.
“The cab has been located in 20 feet of water. They’re ascertaining the water to approach the scene,” said Delaware River and Bay Authority spokesman James Salmon.
Authorities say they were able to respond to the crash immediately because live traffic cameras recorded the truck hitting the wall.
Delaware River and Bay Authority officials say they’ve suspended the search for the driver due to the tide and water conditions in the area.
