People were able to turn in their guns - illegal or not - for cold, hard cash on Saturday.
New Jersey State Police ran its first statewide Guns for Cash buyback event this weekend at three drop-off spots in Trenton, Camden and Newark.
State Attorney General Chris Porrino says the event is on track to be the most successful in the state's history.
Up to $200 was offered in exchange for assault rifles and $100 for smaller firearms. Porrino says the event is one part of a double-barreled approach to end gun violence by offering amnesty and anonymity to everyone who turns in a weapon.
Come Monday, he says stricter rules will be enforced in the state. He says those with illegal weapons will have no opportunity for bail and will be locked up.
The guns collected will be shipped to an incinerator to be melted down.
